Summer 2023 Research Experience and Fall Semester STEM Conferences

We want to first showcase two of our MARC scholars for their work during the Summer. Lisa Lowe and Princess Santiago are the first-ever MARC students to participate in the summer research off-island opportunity with a lab their mentor collaborated with. Lisa was a senior graduating with a B.S. degree in Engineering. Her summer research experience took her to UCLA to conduct research with Dr. Mohanty. Princess was an incoming senior and traveled to the University of Wisonsin-Madison and continued to research selenium and brown adipocytes with Dr. Galmozzi.

We also want to congratulate a few of our MARC students for being recognized at a recent conference that they attended in the Fall. SACNAS (Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science) 2023 was held on October 26-28 in Portland, Oregon. Ms. Alena Albertson who is part of the 2021 – 2023 MARC Cohort presented her research project on “Investigating Heat Stress and Unfolded Protein Response-signaling Pathways in Plants.” and was recognized under the Life Sciences, Cell/Molecular Biology category. She was later interviewed by JABSOM and an article was later published and posted here.

ABRCMS (Annual Biomedical Research Conference For Minoritized Scientists) 2023 was held from November 15-18 in Phoenix, Arizona. A small group of MARC students attended this conference and Mr. Keanu Rochette Yu-Tsuen was recognized in his category presenting his project on correlating the presence of leptospiraceae in a Native Hawaiian Mariculture System to environmental factors. We are very proud of all our MARC students and their accomplishments. We know the hard work they put into their projects is not minimal.
